Khatuna Lorig, five-time Olympian, two-time Team USA archer, coach of The Hunger Game’s Jennifer Lawrence, was the only American to make it to the medal round of the individual archery medals. Cruising through the first rounds, her first stumble was in the Final Four, where she lost to eventual gold medalist Bo-Bae Ki of South Korea 6-2.
In her next match, going for the bronze, Lorig had some impressive shots, even hitting so dead center that her arrow hit the camera they place in the center of the bullseye, but she was outlasted by Mariana Avitia of Mexico.
Mexico actually ended up with both bronze and silver, showing that they may be the next world power in women’s archery.
Lorig won bronze in 1992 as part of the Unified Team. And while she may not have won a medal in London, her role in helping on The Hunger Games has brought the sport of archery to perhaps its highest popularity ever. –Brian McClintock
