I'll preface this with the fact that the GoHUNTn Dog has a very unusual name: Boru. It's after the last high king of Ireland, and happens to be a great name to shout. I also picked it for many of the reason's that Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's Bob St. Pierre outlines in his blog today.
He lists the top 10 dog names of 2010 from VPI Pet Insurance. Names like Bella (I guess because of Twilight?), Bailey, Max. Pretty generic names. As Bob points out:
"There is no doubt thousands of bird dogs with these names will develop into some of the best hunting machines on the planet. I simply prefer a name that stands out equal to a pup’s talents."
He also did a blog about names to completely avoid for gun dogs, like Rooster, which you mine as well name your dog "Take Him," and Drake because everyone and their mother has a dog named Drake.
Bob's guidelines are great for naming a new gun pup (his own dog's name is Trammell after the Detroit Tiger great). So, before you settle on a name, check out Bob's rules.
And I'll add this one, if there's a chance that you would ever meet the love of your life, and your dog happens to have the same name, it's probably not going to end well.
