If you shoot a banded duck, you get a prize. If you shoot a radio-collared bear, you get chastised by bear researchers.
Capturing bears, putting a collar on them, and tracking them over the years is extremely important for the conservation of the species, but supporters of the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minn., are trying to make it illegal to shoot a bear that has a collar on it.
While I certainly sympathize with the researchers, and the NRBC does great work, if I had a trophy black bear stroll up to me, in season, with a collar on, I'd probably shoot him. Wouldn't you?
