White deer are off limits to the residents of Sauk County, Wisconsin, but some out-of-towners didn’t know that rule.

Two hunters each shot an albino deer during opening gun season on November 17 and 18, according to Outdoor Hub.

“As far as the DNR is concerned, this was a legal harvest, that’s really the end of the story,” said DNR spokesman Bob Manwell. “There’s nothing illegal about it. The deer was taken and registered and that’s it. Whether local area sentiment is involved, well, it is what it is.”

The local community is outraged, and these hunters are not welcomed back in Sauk County. -Brian McClintock

It seems like every year another person finds proof of a Sasquatch roaming somewhere in the world, this time it’s Siberia.

According to the Daily Mail, Russian scientists claimed back in October that a hair found in Siberia is to “unknown mammal closely related to man.” They found the hair in a cave last year, and after significant analysis, they are saying it’s a Yeti.

“We had ten samples of hair to study, and have concluded that they belong to mammal, but not a human,” said Professor Valentin Sapunov, of the Russian State Hydrometeorological Institute.

Whether or not it is actually a Yeti has yet to be determined, but research at three universities, including one in the U.S., show that this very well could be proof that Big Foot is real. -Brian McClintock

When you’re in a survival situation, you’ll eat just about anything. But actually hunting tarantulas?

That’s what British photographer George Nickels got to experience in Cambodia, where he’s lived for the past year, according to the Daily Mail. Basically, children as young as 5 years old, go out, snatch the tarantulas with their fingers, drown them, and then fry them in butter or oil. Dinner is served.

“The spiders are caught using a very primitive simple yet effective technique, where the hunter will tease the creature from its den by the ways of using a stick to tickle its web to entice the tarantula to the surface,” says Nickels.

The thai zebra tarantula that are the delicacies in the area are poisonous, but not deadly. Nickels compares their bite to a bad bee sting.

“They are taught to catch many creatures, sometimes venomous and sometimes not. They are also skilled in catching snakes, scorpions, rats, frogs, and lizards,” says Nickels. -Brian McClintock

Turkeys don’t get a pardon from us here at GoHUNTn, and now PETA doesn’t want them pardoned at all?

This, sadly, does not mean that the PETA folks are putting real meat on their Thanksgiving table this year instead of their Tofurkey. Instead, they are urging President Obama to skip the pardoning ritual because they think it makes light of all the innocent fowl that will be on dinner tables across America tomorrow, according to USA Today.

“This year, we encourage you to forgo this event, which so many Americans find offensive, and choose a delicious, healthy Tofurky roast for your family’s holiday table. Thank you for your consideration. We wish you, your family, and all Americans a happy, violence-free Thanksgiving,” writes PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.

Thankfully, President Obama is not letting PETA sway the presidential tradition. The White House is using Facebook to let the world decide whether Cobbler or Gobbler to the turkey will be pardoned this year, with polls closing yesterday night. No official word, but it looks like Cobbler is free this year. Sorry Gobbler. -Brian McClintock

With mountain lions attacking hunters in Nebraska, it’s no surprise that they’ve moved east of the Mississippi into Illinois, and now there is some trail camera proof.

According to Outdoor Hub, there have only been four confirmed cougar sightings in Illinois since 1870. And the latest came on October 28. Hunter Mark Cobb of Sherman was checking his trail camera photos when he came across this photo.

”Sunday afternoon, I got the SD cards out of the cameras and was sitting at my sister’s kitchen counter and was checking them out,” Cobb told The State Journal-Register. “I just kind of went, ‘Oh, my God,’ and everybody thought I had a big deer on there.”

It wasn’t a big deer, but it was something a lot cooler. There was another confirmed cougar sighting in the state near the Wisconsin boarder in September that authorities believe may be the same cat. -Brian McClintock

Three young men went out for hike to prepare for Marine Corps boot camp, but it ended in a shocking tragedy.

According to Outdoor Hub, Joshua Ruzsa and his two friends were hiking on Monday, October 29, climbing up a cliff face at Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona when they got too close to hive of Africanized bees. The bees are known to be aggressive, which is why they have earned the nickname of killer bees. Ruzsa tried to out-climb the bees, but ended up falling 150-feet to his death. At this time, it’s unclear whether the fall killed him or the bees.

No matter what, one thing is clear. America lost one of its future finest. -Brian McClintock

While the bulk of the damage from Hurricane Sandy has impacted the Mid-Atlantic, there is damage elsewhere. And while Florida escaped most of the storm, there was enough damage in Nassau County, Florida to get the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission worried.

A tree fell on the he fence of their enclosure at the White Oak Conservation Center which held two sibling panthers. The panthers decided to use that broken fence to escape. The panther kittens that escaped were found after a 24-hour exploration and returned to their pen.

According to the Daily Mail, Kipp Frohlich, head of the Imperiled Species Management Section at the FWC, said: “We are happy to report that the two are back safe and sound. The cats were pursued by panther dogs, darted and moved back into their enclosure.” -Brian McClintock

It’s a prop from a spy movie, but someone thought hiding a pistol inside of a hallowed-out book was a good idea. Unfortunately, someone decided to donate that book to the Valparaiso branch of the Porter County Public Library in Indiana.

According to the ValpoCommunity.com, the weapon was described by police as a gold, wooden handle, A.S.M. brand, .31-caliber, single shot, black powder gun. It was hidden inside a book titled Outerbridge Reach. It’s not certain if this is a real antique or a replica, or if it was stolen, but police are currently keeping it as evidence. -Brian McClintock

Viterbo University in LaCrosse, Wisconsin is a pretty decent place to go to school if you like to hunt and fish, but one deer decided to come straight to the campus and had some trouble getting out.

Baseball players were walking to practice when they saw a buck trapped in one of the campus soccer nets. The buck had gotten its antlers tangled, and could not get itself freed. The baseball players made a call for help, which eventually landed on the desks of Warden Supervisor Tyler Strelow of the Mississippi River Team and Conservation Warden Ed McCann of La Crosse.

Using a combination of a knife, a trap-stick, and a zip-tie, they were able to fashion a long enough handle to cut the net and free the thrashing, 200-pound deer. 

“He was free, but he ran to the fence and it became clear he must have jumped the fence to get into the field to begin with,” McCann said. “The deer was too tired to jump out.” So the wardens got some people to help open the field fence. It wasn’t too long before the deer found the opening and dashed off to freedom, according to the official release. -Brian McClintock

West Virginia is a beautiful state with great hunting, but it doesn’t get a lot of respect outside of a John Denver song. But for the sixth year in a row, the state has found itself on the top of a list…State Farm’s list of the states that you have the biggest chance of hitting a deer with your car or truck.

According to the official release on the Archery Wire, there is a one in 40 chance that you will hit a deer in the next 12 months in West Virginia. State Farm compiles the information from their claims to come up with the rankings. Deer collisions were up 7.7 percent this year over last year.

Here’s the top 10 from State Farm’s list:

A five-hour stake out and three years of searching have lead to the capture of one of Florida’s most elusive creatures, a 40-pound rhesus monkey.

The monkey was first spotted in 2009 near Tampa Bay, and it has been spotted on and off in the area since then. According to Time.com, no one knows where the monkey came from, but believe it may have escaped from a colony in Silver Springs, residents of which were used in Tarzan movies.

Officials got a good tip, though, and spent five hours staking out the area, getting ready to trap the monkey. Officials were able to dart the monkey, and then they had to chase it through the wilds. The wicked, wicked monkey attacked a 60-year-old woman earlier this month, which intensified plans to try to find it.

The monkey, named Cornelius after the Planet of the Apes character, is with a veterinarian for observation.  –Brian McClintock

There are plenty of fun bear encounters in Alaska, but this one would be pretty startling.

In a reverse-Goldilocks scenario, a black bear found a house open in Ketchikan, Alaska. The homeowner woke up to find the bear trapped in the house. Evidently, as the bear came in, it knocked over a garbage can, which lodged a door shut. The bear couldn’t get out of the house, and proceeded to trash the room he was in, knocking over a freezer and clawing at the windows, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

Police were able to pry the door open just wide enough for the bear to escape. In all, the bear caused about $1,000 in damage, but didn’t eat anything. –Brian McClintock

There are plenty of hunting accidents out there every year, but this one is a little different.

According to Gawker, a 9-year-old girl was dressed up as a skunk in New Sewickley Township, Pennsylvania for a Halloween party. A male relative of the girl, was not drunk but carrying a shotgun, saw the girl and thought it was a real (presumably giant) skunk. He thought he was getting rid of the skunk when he shot his relative in the shoulder.

There’s no report on how the girl is doing or if charges will be filed. –Brian McClintock

We shared the image of this cat’s tail and a bit of its leg, and we, along with Arizona Game and Fish, have been wondering what kind of wild cat this is.

Well, officials now believe it is a jaguar.

“Analysis of the spot pattern on the tail as well as the animal’s size when compared to the surrounding vegetation and to other animals led us to believe the photo showed a jaguar. Without biasing the results by announcing our in-house conclusions, we asked others that work with large cat conservation to weigh in because of the limited information the photo provided,” said Game and Fish Nongame Branch Chief Eric Gardner, according to the release on the Archery Wire.

The cat was captured on a hunter’s trail camera just southeast of Tucson. Jaguars were first confirmed in the United States in 1997. -Brian McClintock

It’s hard to believe this is true, but according to Buzzfeed, none of these photos are doctored.

Evidently, Casey Anderson first adopted Brutus the Grizzly Bear as a cub, when he was born in an over-crowded bear sanctuary. Anderson moved Brutus to his own sanctuary, Montana Wildlife Grizzly Encounter Wildlife Sanctuary, and since then, they’ve been close. So close, in fact, that Brutus was Anderson’s best man at his wedding to actress Missi Pyle, and the bear has sat at Anderson’s dinner table.

Most wild animal-human friendships don’t end well for the human. Hopefully this one is different. -Brian McClintock

There are black, yellow, chocolate even red and silver labs, but a green lab? That’s what one breeder in Clayton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England found when their 2-year-old yellow labrador retriever, Buttons, gave birth to eight puppies.

“It wasn’t totally obvious at first, but when we put him down next to the others you could really see it. Hulk is definitely one of a kind,” said Sandra Grimes, who owns Buttons, according to the Daily Mail.

The greenish tint lead them to name the pup Hulk, after the Incredible one, and it’s a rare condition that happens when a pup’s mother is exposed during pregnancy to a substance called biliverdin, which can be found in the placenta. Their light-color-coated offspring can get a green tint to it, which fades over time.

It’s not the first time a yellow lab has come out green. In 2010, a puppy in Brazil was also named Hulk when he came out green.

No word if the British Hulk is going to stay with its breeders or who will get to make him the newest addition to their family. -Brian McClintock

It was supposed to be just a good day duck hunting in Aberdeenshire, Scotland but it turned into tragedy.

Matthew Will was out with his black labrador retriever, Fly, hunting ducks, but as Fly went out for a retrieve, a seal grabbed him. 

“This huge seal, more than twice the size of the dog, was flinging Fly around and pulling him under the water. I was horrified. The seal was enormous,” said Will, according to the Daily Mail. “Both his hind legs were completely crushed and mangled, his rib cage smashed and his left eye torn out. He was pouring with blood and in spasms of agony.”

Will is warning other hunters to beware, regardless of officials saying this kind of attack is very rare.

“I’m still trying to come to terms with it all. Now I just want to warn other dog-owners of the danger so that they won’t have to face the same anguish and horror that I have,” said Will. -Brian McClintock

Some homeowners in Arizona were sound asleep when they heard a commotion coming from downstairs.

They did not expect to come upon a black bear cub chomping down on some chocolate cake. 

“Homeowners awoke to find a bear cub had entered their home through an open kitchen window and eaten some chocolate cake,” Arizona Game and Fish Department officers said in a statement, according to the Daily Mail. “Since there was no sign of an adult bear in the area, Game and Fish removed the cub and transferred the orphaned bear to the Heritage Park Zoo in Prescott.”

Authorities fear that because of the wild fires, more bear-human interactions. -Brian McClintock

A man was minding his own business in Bushy Park, England when a rutting stag had a different idea.

The Orange News shared the video of a man running up a tree for his life, screaming for help. 

A witness who filmed the incident explained: “He was just walking along the path and stopped, but the stag took his choice and went after the bloke instead.

“He just shouted “help, help” but you couldn’t get close because the stag was just too hyped up.”

It’s not a strange scene in the African wilds. A lioness goes out and kills an impala. But, when she finds its calf right there, well, it seems that she’s a little nicer to the younger animal.

According to the Daily Mail, Photographer Adri De Visser had just seen a lioness devour a Ugandan Kob, which managed to break the skin of the lioness. Then, its fawn popped out. 

“The fawn just stood there before running into the lioness. It went between its legs like it was trying to get its milk, said De Visser. “The lioness was really confused and they stood there for around 45 minutes. So the lioness picked the fawn up by the neck and carried it off like one of its own. We heard from a group of tourists that the fawn was later spotted alive and well.”

You can see plenty of interesting things while sitting in your treestand. But for two hunters in Minnesota, they uncovered some criminal activity.

According to Outdoor Hub, on two different occurrences, hunters helped lead police to busting marijuana rings. Both hunters are part of an urban deer culling program in Mendota Heights, Minnesota. While hunting on public land, the archers found teenagers coming in and harvesting marijuana. It’s helped bring down some big pot production, but it is also bringing a lot of attention to the urban deer removal program.

“It’s drawn a lot of attention to the deer hunting operation,” Mendota Heights Police Chief Mike Aschenbrener said. “That’s good and bad.” -Brian McClintock

What is this cat?

That is what the Arizona Game and Fish Department is wondering after just its tail and a bit of hind leg was captured on a trail camera.

“We have definitively determined that it is either a jaguar or an ocelot, but we need to do further analysis of the animal’s spot patterns and size to try to positively identify which species it is,” said Game and Fish Nongame Branch Chief Eric Gardner, according to the official release on Outdoor Wire.

Both jaguars and ocelots have been spotted in Arizona in the past, but very infrequently. Officials are still trying to figure out just what this cat is. -Brian McClintock

The Inuits living in Kaktovik, Alaska hold an annual whale hunt.

The controversial killing of bowhead whales is their native tradition, and it’s attracting polar bears.

According to National Geographic, Steven Amstrup, chief scientist at Polar Bear International, said he’s not surprised. Polar bears “are not dumb animals,” Amstrup said. “They know the time of year that the meat starts to show up on the beach.”  -Brian McClintock

You wouldn’t expect an owner of an auto parts store to be involved in a wildlife trafficking ring, but that’s what happened in Sedgewick, Alberta.

Garland Larry Poyser, owner of Poyser Auto Service, is facing two counts of unlawfully trafficking in wildlife, one count of possessing wildlife for the purpose of trafficking, and one count of unlawful possession of wildlife. The charges could land him in jail for three years, and he could be paying $150,000 in fines.

A search of Poyser Auto Service uncovered 500 sets of whitetail deer and mule deer antlers, 36 sets of moose antlers, six sets of elk antlers and one set of caribou antlers, according to the official release on Outdoor Hub.

“Illegal trafficking of wildlife will not be tolerated in Alberta. This is a very serious crime that needs to be dealt with through serious punishments,” said, Justice and Solicitor General Minister Jonathan Denis. “My thanks go out to the fish and wildlife officers for their great work on this investigation and for continuing to protect Alberta’s wildlife resources.”

A bunch of Bonnie and Clyde’s Tommy gun and shotguns were recently sold for a total of $210,000, and now the famous duo’s pistols have brought in more than twice as much.

According to CNN.com, Bonnie Parker’s personal Colt .38 snub-nosed revolver, which sold for $264,000. Clyde Barrow’s Colt .45 sold for $240,000. The guns were found on their bodies when they were ambushed and shot by police in Louisiana in 1934.

“These amazing and historic weapons were found on the couple the morning of their deaths and gifted to Capt. (Frank) Hamer, along with other items from that ill-fated day, on May 23, 1934. The guns, along with other items, were taken by authorities at the time as part of his compensation package for the ambush,” said Bobby Livingston, vice president at RR Auction, in a news release. Hamer was one of the officers who killed the gangster duo.

No word on who shelled out the big bucks for the pistols. -Brian McClintock

Alexis Lorenz rescued her beagle years ago, and Brandi the Beagle, had never been in water since Lorenz adopted her, but that changed on Friday, September 21.

Lorenz’s husband came home from walking Brandi, and he said he lost the dog. Frantically, they went out looking for her, making their way to the toll booth at the Burlington Bristol Bridge in Burlington City, New Jersey. The bridge spans the Delaware River crossing into Pennsylvania. A toll taker saw the beagle head for the center of the bridge, and then, Brandi jumped.

No one is sure why the dog jump, but one man saw her doggy paddling her way back to shore. Then, thankfully, Brandi made it back home to the Lorenz family. -Brian McClintock

“It’s creepy, that’s all I’m gonna say.”

That is Preston Logan’s thought when he and his sister, Savannah, found a two-headed snake near their home in South Carolina. The rough earth snake is a weird find, but not unprecedented. Scientists equate the snake to a siamese twin. The kids are enjoying showing this creepy critter, though, taking it in to school. -Brian McClintock

There was definitely harm, but one hunter is not saying that anything was foul.

While hunting in the Dordogne region of France with his his three blue Gascony basset hounds, a man only known as Rene, had his hand shot off when his youngest dog jumped into his lap, and his gun went off.

“He jumped on top of me for a cuddle” and accidentally fired the gun, shooting him in the right hand, Rene said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, according to Outdoor Hub.

They rushed Rene to the hospital, but they were unable to save his right hand.

“It wasn’t the dog’s fault,” Rene insisted. “And he’s adorable! I should have left the (gun’s) safety on, that’s all.” –Brian McClintock

There are plenty of scary things living in New York City, but officials found a creepy stash of animals in a Brooklyn apartment.

According to the Daily Mail, Animal Care and Control officials were brought into the apartment to remove a pair of alligators, bearded dragons, a gecko, a scorpion, a tarantula, a boa constrictor and five pythons from the apartment. Many remember the tiger that was living in Harlem in 2003, but these animals were not as much of a problem.

There’s no word that these reptiles and spider were treated inhumanely, but these animals are not allowed in public housing. No word on where these creepy, crawly critters were carted off to. -Brian McClintock

Sierra Downing was camping near Pagosa Springs, Colorado when she walked by a partially eaten, dead squirrel. As many 7-year-old girls would have, she took off her sweatshirt, and dug a hole for a final resting place for the squirrel.

Unfortunately, the squirrel was invested with fleas carrying the bubonic plague. Those fleas got in her sweatshirt, biting her, and spreading the plague to the young camper. 

According to Outdoor Hub, her parent’s just thought she had a regular flu, but when her fever spike to 107 degrees, she suffered a seizure, sending doctors looking for answers as to what was wrong with her. It took them awhile, but they found out that she had the plague.

She has been battling the disease for two weeks now at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children, but is expected to be released soon, as she has recovered. -Brian McClintock

It seems that more and more rabid beavers are setting their sites on unsuspecting swimmers.

This time, 83-year-old Lillian Peterson was just getting out of Lake Bancroft in Fairfax County just outside of Washington, D.C. when something knocked her feet out from under her. It was a 35-pound, 24-inch rabid beaver. 

According to the Washington Post, “the Falls Church woman and a friend battled the animal with canoe paddles, a stick and bare hands as it came at them again and again. Peterson was seriously injured.”

“It bit me so bad,” Peterson said during a phone call from her bed at Inova Fairfax Hospital, where she was recovering. “I started kicking it with my other leg, but I wasn’t sure what I would do.”

Peterson, an avid swimmer and realtor with Long & Foster, was out for her regular swim when the attack happend. Thankfully, her coworker was also on the private, 135-acre lake giving a fishing lesson, and was able to motor over to Peterson and help her get away from the beaver, but not without an epic struggle in which the beaver sprang back to life after they thought they had killed it. It also made a bee-line to try to attack the boat. They finally trapped the beaver and animal control officers euthanized the animal.

The beaver took a bite out of her left calf, nearly bit off her thumb, and left puncture wounds all over her arms and legs. She is recovering from serious injuries and rabies treatments. -Brian McClintock

The story of Missy the German shepherd is well known now: The dog that was stranded on the side of Mt. Bierstadt in Colorado because her feet was too sore to carry on. Her owner, Anthony Ortolani, new that Missy was hurting, but couldn’t scale the mountain with his dog. He and his friend decided to safely make it down Bierstadt and send in the search and rescue crews.

When he got to the base, though, he learned that they don’t rescue dogs, and he assumed Missy was gone to him.

Then, a week later, on August 11, Scott and Amanda Washburn found Missy. Not able to get her down, they gave her some food and water, and posted their find on the online forum 14ers.com. Within days, a rescue mission formed, and Missy was saved.

Ortolani was thrilled, but the rescuers were not so quick to give the hurt dog back to him. Instead, they took the matter to the police, who have charged him with animal cruelty. His first hearing is October 16. –Brian McClintock

There are plenty of ugly looking creatures in the wild. As hunters, we get to see many of them while out in the woods, marshes, and hills, and now National Geographic Wild is profiling them.

According to the Daily Mail, zoologist Lucy Cooke is slated to host the show for the cable station and tell the story of things like the naked mole rat, the vulture, and the pangolins.

“There are so many television shows about koala bears and kittens,” Cooke protests. “Why should orangutans in Borneo get all the love when there’s a monkey there with a giant nose, a massive potbelly and a chili pepper for a penis?”

Why indeed.

People introducing pets into the local ecosystem is how 17-foot pythons started living in the Everglades. And authorities in Sunbury, Pennsylvania are hoping that there is not a gator outbreak at their reservoir.

Police ended up killing a nearly 6-foot-long alligator that was seen swimming in the municipality reservoir. It wasn’t easy. After spotting the gator, the Fish and Boat Commission decided that they didn’t want anything to do with the gator. Then, they looked for local animal handlers, but they weren’t available either. So, the police had to take action.

“Exotic animals, in adulthood, become a danger and hazard to ill equipped owners,” a police spoksman said. “Depositing such animals in publicly accessible areas then endangers the public.” –Brian McClintock

This woman just could not catch a break.

A woman was driving near Hanestad village in Norway when she saw a moose in the middle of the road. Swerving to miss the moose, she landed her car right into a brown bear.

“The driver had lost a bit of speed as she tried to avoid the moose before hitting the bear,”  local wildlife official Svein Erik Bjorke told Reuters, according to BBC. ”We are currently tracking the bear and we have found traces of blood indicating internal injuries.”

The driver and the moose were not hurt, but the car did suffer significant damage. –Brian McClintock

A general rule is that you don’t really want to get tangled up with a bull moose. But, when the moose gets tangled, that’s a different story.

According to Outdoor Hub, Police Sergeant Lane Findlay risked serious injury to help out a bull moose who was ensnared in a swing set in Weber County, Utah. Thankfully, Sgt. Findlay came out unharmed. –Brian McClintock

All Mark Christianson wanted to do was spray his soybeans, but an 8-point whitetail deer wanted that field to himself, and came after Christianson.

As soon as Chirstianson stepped out his side door, the buck started toward him.

“He was pummeling me, standing on his hind legs and hitting me with the front ones. He hammered me good, rapid fire, and I thought, `Well, this isn’t good.’ I wasn’t winning, so I grabbed him and tackled him and we both went down on the ground,” said Christianson, according to Star Tribune.

He was left with black eyes and bruises throughout his body, but he was able to grab his 30-06 rifle and put the deer down.

It wasn’t Christianson’s first encounter with the deer. Two days before the fight, he spotted the deer near a shed. Instead of running away, the buck came up to the window and started ramming it with its antlers.

Friends “have given me some grief about it all,” Christianson said. “They said they don’t believe my story. They say, `It’s the wife.’” –Brian McClintock

Don’t go in the water in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Normand Brousseau was one of the leaders on a scout trip to the Delaware River near Poughkeepsie, enjoying a nice float on noodle in the river when something started to swim up to him.

“It came through my legs and attached itself to my chest,” he said, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. “I thought it was a giant carp fish.”

It wasn’t. It was a rabid beaver.

The beaver attacked Brousseau, biting his legs, buttocks, hands and waist. Brousseau was able to keep the beaver at a bay until some of his scouts came to his rescue. They threw the beaver to the shore and pelted it with stones until it was dead. We’re not sure there’s a badge for killing rabid beavers. –Brian McClintock

Sure, our Olympic shooters know how to hit the clay pigeons, but back in 1900, they were shooting at some live ones.

As part of iVillage.Co.UK’s collection of “weird and wonderful former Olympic sports,” 1900′s event of live pigeon shooting made the list. The games, held in Paris, featured a contest where pigeons were released before each shooter. As soon as the contestant missed two shots, they were eliminated.

Belgium’s Leon de Lunden scooped gold with 21 hits. This is the only occasion animals were intentionally harmed in an Olympic event, writes iVillage.

I’ve heard of animals getting drunk on some fermented apples before, but these bears seemed determined to find beer in Norway.

According to TheLocal.No, a bear and three cubs ripped down a cabin wall and had a bit of a party in Jarfjord, Finnmarken, Norway. 

“They had a hell of a party in there,” cabin owner Even Borthen Nilsen told NRK. ”The cabin has the stench of a right old piss up, trash, and bears.”

Nilsen’s mother and grandmother discovered the cabin torn to shreds with more than 100 beers emptied, and food, including marshmallows, chocolate and honey, completely devoured. Between the footprints and the excrement, Nilsen that the bears were the culprits in this reverse Goldilocks crime. –Brian McClintock

Bella Mae will never go near another porcupine! The 3-year-old bulldog from Oklahoma was playing with other family pets near a pond, when a porcupine joined the group and apparently took an instant dislike to poor Bella Mae.

Not to worry, thanks to local vets, emergency surgery to remove the 500+ quills from her face, jowls, and body was successful, and she’s recovering. Click here to read more at the The Mail Online and to see additional photos and video.

Well, being a shepherd just got a lot easier.

According to the Outdoor Hub, European scientists are in the process of constructing a collar that will monitor a sheep’s heart rate, alerting the herders and ranchers when their pulse is racing and a wolf may be nearby. Europeans, especially the Swiss, are afraid that a growing wolf population is going to decimate their sheep herds.

“Ten sheep were equipped with a heart monitor and then the animals were approached by muzzled Czechoslovakian wolfdogs. Normally a sheep’s pulse is between 60 to 80 beats per minute. When scared by the wolfdogs, their heart rate jumped to 225 beats per minute. The text message was effectively sent when the elevated heart rate occurred,” writes Outdoor Hub.

If they work, I’m guessing some U.S. ranchers will be first in line to buy a few. –Brian McClintock

It’s not a good week to be a bulldog.

Bella the bulldog was outside her owner’s house in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma when a porcupine decided to use their pond as a watering hole. A familiar outcome for many dog owners, Bella did not fare so well when confronting the porcupine. She got stuck with more than 500 quills, in what the veterinarian is saying is the worst porcupine attack he’s seen. –Brian McClintock

James Geist is a social studies teacher in New York City, so we’re pretty sure it takes a lot to shake him. But after discovering two pythons in his West Milford, New Jersey backyard in the span of four days, he’s pretty shocked.

According to the Huffington Post, Geist was sitting on his back porch when he thought he saw a tree limb move. It turned out to be a 15-foot albino python. Then, four days later, he discovered a 10-foot python. Officials believe they were pets that were released into the swamps of Jersey, which is exactly how the python problem started in the Everglades, and now they’re at the top of the food chain down there. –Brian McClintock

Tech XX was the face of Louisiana Tech Bulldog athletics, but they will be looking for Tech XXI, and probably a new caretaker for their bulldog.

At first, locals thought that it was a prank or that he had run away, but Tech XX went missing earlier this week. But today, August 1, the university learned much sadder news from the Sexton Animal Health Center of Ruston, Louisiana. According to Deadspin, Dr. Patrick Sexton reached out to the Louisiana Tech saying that the pooch had died due to human error and that instead of fessing up to killing Tech 20, the employee tried to cover it up.

“Regretfully, I learned this morning that through negligence of an employee, Tech XX was left outside too long on Sunday evening and passed away from a heat stroke,” wrote Dr. Sexton. “We are devastated over the circumstances of his passing and there will be a large void in our hearts for some time to come. As with any family member, we will spend considerable time grieving his passing.”

No word on a replacement for either the mascot or if Dr. Sexton’s crew is going to continue on as caretake for future Techs. –Brian McClintock

Sadly, I’m not surprised about this.

We told you yesterday that a presumably crazy person has dressed up like a mountain goat and took to the hills to roam with the animals. Well, we have now found out that it is a passionate hunter.

According to Outdoor Hub, Utah wildlife officials received an anonymous call from a southern Californian who has owned up to being goatman. He was just testing his goat suit in preparation of an upcoming mountain goat hunt in Canada. He heard that Utah goats were easier to get to, so that’s why he headed there for a little field test.

His suit seemed to allow him to get pretty close. And was made from a hooded painter’s suit and a fleece, in case you want to try. –Brian McClintock

Those lucky enough to hunt mountain goats in Utah this fall may want to make sure their target isn’t a man in a goat suit.

According to Fox13Now, hiker and photographer Coty Creighton was roaming Ben Lomond Peak near Ogden, Utah when he saw what looked like a goat trying to clumsily stay with the herd. He pulled up his binoculars and quickly found out that it was not a goat, but a man in a goat suit.

“Me and Goatman were the only people for miles around,” says Creighton

The goatman saw Creighton and appeared to be embarrassed  that someone caught him being a goat.

“He kind of slouched down, like was getting nervous or was feeling really self-conscious,” Creighton said. “He actually got off his hands and knees and sat on the hill for several minutes until he thought I was gone.”

Investigators are trying to find the man. He’s not doing anything illegal, but they are worried that the goats could attack him, or with hunting season creeping up, he could get shot.  –Brian McClintock

Most people who use ground blinds take painstaking measures to make sure their already camouflaged enclosures are blended into their surroundings. This just makes all the work of sticking branches in a blind unnecessary.

According to the Outdoor Hub, Tim Thompson, a Hollywood special effects creator who is also a Texas deer hunter was sick of deer busting him in his blind. So, he used his skills to create the TreeBlind. His new company, Nature Blinds, tries to take the camouflaging of ground blinds into a highly realistic level, literally creating blinds that look like tree stumps.

The blind has “enough space for two hunters to stand upright, scent-blockers and ample insulation/venting to keep a blind cool in summer and warm in winter.” There is also a wheelchair upgrade for hunters with disabilities to use the blind.

The blinds are $3,450, but reportedly selling well. –Brian McClintock

You wouldn’t think that a coyote would be able to scare off a mountain lion, but that’s just what happened in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in southern California.

Robert Meyer was hiking in the Orange County park when he captured this video. The park had just reopened after a 2-year-old mountain lion was spotted on July 7. It’s pretty rare to see this footage, and awesome that a hiker was there to share the scene with us. –Brian McClintock

Michele Lee was just on an afternoon stroll with her dog when the raccoons attacked.

At around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, July 16, near Fort Steilacoom Park, Lea and her dog were attacked by a pack of raccoons. Her dog, Madison, quickly took off after them, chasing two up a tree. When she went to get Madison back, the rest of them swarmed her. About six or seven raccoons chased her, knocking her down, scratching and biting her. 

She received staples and stitches for 16 puncture wounds, and is under going preventative rabies treatments.

Locals believe this is the same pack of raccoons that have been in the area for at least 17 years, and that a few in the neighborhood feed.  –Brian McClintock

Beavers are clever creatures, who can cause quite a bit of destruction, and whose pelts make fetching coats.

Leopold Kanzler was heading down the Danube River in Germany when he saw a beaver swimming by. A photographer, Kanzler kept an eye on the water rodent, and the beaver helped him out.

‘I’d been following him with my camera for a few minutes and, after having a nibble on some nearby branches, he seemed to do a little dance.,” said Kanzler, of Vienna, Austria, according to the Daily Mail. “I didn’t notice it at first but he kept going and, once he got up on his hind legs with a big grin on his face, it definitely looked like a dance.”

Eurasian beavers are one of the largest living species of rodent in the world – growing to more than 5 feet from head to tail and weighing around 40 pounds. –Brian McClintock

Diablo, the deer who’s semen caused a controversy.

Raymond Favero, of Braidwood, Illinois, plead guilty on Wednesday, July 11 to acquisition of wildlife in interstate commerce in violation of state law, a federal charge which can carry a prison sentence, all because of some whitetail deer semen.

Favery brought enough semen from Texas to impregnate 110 does. He brought the deer, too, which could end up costing him $150,000 in fine, $50,000 in compensation, and a year in prison. Favero was indicted last month on the charges that date back to 2007. Deer breeding is big business in Texas, and Favero was hoping to cash in with the semen of a large Cherokee County, Texas buck nicknamed Diablo. He took 187 straws of semen from Diablo, and in 2008, another 110 straws from Thunderstuck.

According to the Houston Chronicle, this case looks like it is related to the one involving Billy Powell, a Cherokee County deer breeder who agreed in 2011 to pay a $1.5 million fine as part of pleading guilty to illegally transporting wildlife. Snakes can be a scary part of hunting, especially if you’re in poisonous snake territory. And if you’ve ever wondered how snake venom works, here’s the video to show you.

Basically, the venom coagulates the blood into a jelly-like substance, which would make it pretty hard to flow through your body and keep your body functioning. It’s a pretty horrifying video, and you may be running out for some snake boots after watching it.  –Brian McClintock

Elvis didn’t do much that wasn’t flashy and custom, and his Smith & Wesson .357 magnum revolver is no different.

According to Outdoor Hub, California-based retailer, Moments in Time, is selling the ornate gun that boats not only Elvis as a previous owner, but also Vice President Spiro Agnew also owned this little gun. From the Moments in Time website:

Five images of animals including, a Bear, a Bobcat, a Moose, a Mountain Lion and a Puma are inlaid in gold. The ivory grips are carved with a Deer on one side and an Antelope on the other. The artist of the Frederick Wilhelm Heym Company of Germany executed the engraving.

The pistol comes with a custom-made leather zipper case with Elvis’s name tooled on it. Also, the original Firearms investigation report and Registration Paper showing the Serial Number and signature of Elvis A. Presley from the Beverly Hills Police Department are part of the provenance with this pistol.

The price on the pistol is $275,000. Which actually seems pretty fair to us considering the uniqueness of the gun and its owners.  –Brian McClintock

They’re not exactly sure what this is, or how it will impact the deer, but a hunter in Marion County, Kansas found this whitetail doe wandering through her backyard.

Jamie Shriley grabbed her camera when she saw the doe walking through her yard, and her husband, Bill, believes that it is a tube that land managers use to protect their trees. It appears to me to be a plastic tube used to divert water from a drain. According to the Kansas Outdoor blog, while some angles show that the pipe isn’t particularly tight around the doe’s neck, it does increase her chances to get caught in brush and wire, which could lead to a wolf attack or starvation.

Hopefully one way or another, the deer doesn’t suffer. Shirley has some impressive bucks to her name, including a 257 1/8-inch non-typical which still ranks as one of the largest ever shot by a female hunter. –Brian McClintock

It’s a popular activity in many major cities. They will set up stands and tell their city’s residents to bring their guns, and the city will buy them from them, no questions asked. It’s a tactic used to get illegal guns off the streets, but is often coupled with a lot of anti-gun rhetoric. And now a pro-gun group has decided to use that buy back program for their own good in perhaps the most anti-gun city in the nation.

According to FoxNews.com, the program “Guns Save Lives,” based in Champaign, Illinois, took guns that included a shotgun held together with zip ties and duct tape and a few old BB guns, to the Chicago Police Department’s buy back program. Some of the guns dated back to pre-1900, but the police bought them anyway, giving the group $6,240 in gift cards. 

“They recognized it for the junk it was,” group president John Boch said of the sale. “At one of the locations, one of the detectives was very tenacious … And hit the guys with a flurry of questions like ‘Where the hell did you get these, from a graveyard?’ ”

Of course the Chicago police are angry at the group for abusing the system, but the group is angry at the Chicago police for saying that having a gun in the home is more likely to be used in an act of violence or accidental shooting.

Guns Save Lives are using their money to purchase new rifles and ammunition for their annual summer camp held at Darnall Gun Works & Ranges in Bloomington, Illinois. Hopefully some of those inner city kids that Chicago is looking to protect will attend and learn how to properly handle and respect firearms, which is really how they’ll help save lives. –Brian McClintock

Last September, a 20-plus-foot crocodile weighing nearly a ton was captured in Bunawan in Agusan del Sur province in the Philippines. Now Guinness has officially made this croc the new record for the largest of the species kept in captivity.

“There were mixed feelings,” Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said by telephone. “We’re really proud because it proves the rich biodiversity of our place but at the same time, there are fears that Lolong may not be alone.”

The crocodile was responsible for a few deaths, but now it’s giving back to the community. The town has earned 3,000,000 pesos from tourists coming to see the beast. And the town officials are actually hoping to get a permit to catch an even larger croc that has been spotted in the area. –Brian McClintock

They’re enormous, they carry parasites that are detrimental to Texas cattle, and Texas officials can’t get rid of them fast enough. Yet, private landowners are still charging thousands to hunt them.

The “nilgai,” is an invasive species that was originally imported to feed ranchers in the 1920s. After the original import of 600 animals, they spread quickly and there are now as many as 30,000. They tend to give birth to twins.

Texas wildlife officials try to shoot them from helicopters but there’s one problem. Private ranchers charge hunters to pursue the beasts, and they can demand a much as $750 per hunt, with a there’s a $1,000 fee if you take a bull. And because their land is protected, as many as 10,000 of these animals are able to continue spreading disease, free from harm. According to Vice.com, they have extremely thick hides which make them especially challenging to hunt.

Texas has taken extreme measures to get rid of invasive hogs, here’s hoping the ranchers help out the state and start getting rid of more nilgai. – Rick Bach

This is a crime spree even the most crooked felon wouldn’t dream up: Breaking into 14 vehicles in the span of one week. But one black bear in Snowmass Village, Colorado, has done just that.

In the past week, a sow black bear with three cubs has allegedly broken into more than a dozen vehicles.

Officials are urging residents to lock and secure their cars if unattended at all times. According to Aspen Daily News, extremely dry conditions have made it harder for the bears to forage, and they’ve been forced to hunt outside their comfort zones. – Rick Bach

Californians have a lot of regulations when it comes to hunting, and a ban on mountain lion hunting is one of them. But, mountain lions have no qualms using whatever means necessary to hunt us.

According to ABC News, a man sleeping in his tent near Yuba River in California was badly attacked by a sizable cat this past week. His injuries, while severe, where not life threatening. This brings a whole new meaning shotgun wedding.

One couple, Matt and, now, Arlene Munson decided to get hitched at a trap-shooting range in Minot, North Dakota. Matt had been going there since he was 14, and the location seemed like a natural fit. Both partners enjoy hunting, and camo and blaze orange were featured in her wedding dress and his tuxedo, according to the Minot Daily News. Here’s wishing them a lifetime of happy hunting. -Rick Bach

Sadly, a domestic deer in Pennsylvania is responsible for the death of a young 30-year-old woman.

Natalie Shaffer was gored and killed by a rutting axis buck this week on her land in Windsor, Pennsylvania, according to the York Daily Record. Apparently axis bucks in the rut, like this one was, are aggressive this time of year, much like their whitetail deer counterparts in the fall. – Rick Bach

Officials are trying to figure out how a bullet found it’s way inside the Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay after the police chief of Parker, Florida was struck in the leg.

According to TampaBay.com, Charles Sweatt was enjoying a game between the hometown Tampa Bay Rays and the Miami Marlins on June 16 when he felt something sting his leg. At first, he thought he might have been hit by a foul ball, but no one found the ball, they did find a bullet.

Thankfully, Sweatt only suffered a bruise and no other serious injuries. Police are guessing that someone shot a gun in the air in a celebratory fashion, which lead to it falling through the domed stadium.  –Brian McClintock

The town of Hainesport, New Jersey is under attack, and it’s the wild turkey population that is on the prowl.

According to this Fox News report, there have been multiple reports of the wild turkeys, which appear to be gobblers in this video, attacking the town’s residents. One woman describes a bird charging her multiple times, dodging the orange safety cones she was hurling at the bird.

Officials are warning anyone that if they feed the turkeys, they will face a $2,000 fine, and they have promised to round up all the turkeys in the area and ship them to northern New Jersey. But, because of the summer food supply, they won’t be able to do that until the fall. And, we’re a little skeptical that they’ll be able to round up all the turkeys in southern Jersey anyway. The wild ones at least. –Brian McClintock

Too funny! I’m just glad it wasn’t my garage. Apparently this happened in South Lake Tahoe. The cub got stuck in a garage, and while the lady of the house made a video (and held a dog at bay), the mama bear got the garage door open wide enough to get in and encourage her baby to come down off the door track and out the door. Watch that baby use the ladder!

‘Tis the season for bears being crazy. They are fully out of the den and looking for trouble. And when black bears are active, there tends to be some fighting. Fortunately for the viral Internet world, one of those bear battles took place in a suburban front yard near Orlando, Florida, and a woman was able to capture it on her cell phone. –Brian McClintock

Craving some fresh python? We’re guessing not, but if you are, some of south Florida’s best chefs are going to compete to prepare them. And not just snakes, but other varieties of invasive species in the state that’s littered with them.

Lion fish, wild boar, and pythons are among the animals that chefs will be cooking up  in Miami as part of the first “Best Invasive Chef,” competition.

The aim of the competition is twofold. First, to introduce the locals to these species in hopes of building an appetite. And secondly, to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment from potentially harmful species. Oh, and to get rid of a few lion fish and pythons and feed some hungry mouths. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Fertile Earth Foundation. -Rick Bach

Wombats are kind of like the opossums of Australia. But these guys were more like rhinos.

In the Outback of Queensland, Australia, scientists discovered a massive archeological site that contained up to 50 diprotodon skeletons including a huge specimen named Kenny, whose jawbone alone is 28 inches long, according to the Daily Mail.

Diprotodon, the largest marsupial ever to roam the earth, weighing up to 2.8 tons, lived between two million and 50,000 years ago and died out around the time indigenous tribes first appeared. They are not the only giant marsupials that scientists have discovered, with 8-foot tall kangaroo skeletons found previously in the country.

Thankfully, their descendants have all shrunk to much more manageable sizes.  –Brian McClintock

Typhoon Guchol rolled through Japan, killing one, injuring many, and destroying a lot of property. One of the things it destroyed was the squirrel housing at Inokashira Park Zoo in western Tokyo, and now the zookeepers are scurrying to snag them back.

In all, about 30 Japanese squirrels are on the loose throughout the zoo. It’s not certain how much of an attraction the squirrels are at the Inokashira Park Zoo. So far, they’ve been able to net 18 of the squirrels. This isn’t the first animal escape their holding pens in Japan recently. A Humboldt penguin escaped an aquarium and was on the lam for 82 days. Good luck to the zookeepers. I’m sure there are some good squirrel hunters here in the U.S. who would let you borrow their dogs if you need to.  –Brian McClintock

Now this is a kudu we would not want to cross.

According to the Outdoor Hub, Namibia police believe that poacher Johannes Wihinda was killed when he tried to kill a kudu with an axe that he had illegally trapped in Mururani village. They believe when Wihinda walked up to the kudu, the massive African deer gored him in the side, killing him on the spot.

Too bad all poachers don’t face the same end. –Brian McClintock

Video has emerged of an estimated 5,000 ducks taking to the streets when a Chinese farmer decided to take his flock for a walk to a different body of water. No one really knows why this farmer chooses to do so, but it clogged up traffic for quite a bit. –Brian McClintock

Wildlife causes about 1.8 billion yen in damage a year in Nagano Prefecture in central Japan, and 40 percent of that is done by deer, so they are thinking that wolves will help.

The Shinshu Gibier Kenkyukai was launched to figure out how to curtail the spread of the nation’s deer population, which is about 105,000 deer strong. They have done some hunting and trapping, are encouraging people to start adding venison to their cuisine, and now the Japan Wolf Association has suggested introducing foreign wolves into the Alps to prey on deer, according to Outdoor Hub.

Chairman of the Japan Wolf Association Naoki Maruyama said “[By using wolves] the burden on hunters will be reduced and the ecological system will be protected.”

As the old lady who swallowed the fly can tell you, this probably isn’t a smart idea. –Brian McClintock

Tracey Colburn went to let her dog out on Saturday, June 16 around 10 p.m., but when she opened the door, she was greeted by an unwelcome visitor. A massive black bear was on her porch. Her dog tried to chase off the bruin, but it lunged at Colburn leaving her with deep claw cuts on her arms and hands. Eventually, the dog was able to chase off the bear, and Colburn is saying the injuries are not that serious, though she has quite a few stitches and bandages on her lower arms.

The Grafton, New Hampshire woman was cooking a pot roast earlier that day, and it’s believed that is what brought the bear to her porch. Officials are investigating and Colburn is thanking her dog for saving her life. –Brian McClintock

You may not know the tube-lipped nectar bat, but it might be the freakiest living creature in the world. 

According to Headline News, the bat was discovered in 2005 in the Andes Mountains in Ecuador. Then, just last year, scientists realized its tongue was one and-a-half times the size of its entire body and stored in its rib cage, which was filmed doing its thing as part of National Geographic’s “Untamed Americas” documentary series.

The 2-inch bat sports a 3-inch tongue. If a human had the same ratio, his tongue would be in the 9-foot-long range. –Brian McClintock

Earlier this month, a former Pennsylvania Game Commission biologist heard about a weird animal roaming outside of her apartment. It turned out to be a rogue wallaby, and officials have tracked down its owner.

Officials have charged Corry A. Lewis with one count of unlawful importation of wildlife and one count of unlawful possession of wildlife after capturing what is believed to be his wallaby on May 30 in Crawford County in northwest Pennsylvania. The Australian native was tranquilized and taken to a licensed center. Lewis faces a total fine of $300 for all his charges.  –Brian McClintock

When you’re out on a tour of the Florida Everglades, you expect to see some gators and excitement. Well, six tourists got a little more of both than they expected, and a tour guide lost even more.

Wallace Weatherholt, aka Capt. Wally, was out with his group in Everglades National Park operating an outing for Captain Doug’s Everglades Tours, according to the Daily Mail. Capt. Wally decided to break out the marshmallows when a group came upon an alligator, and that was all the incentive the gator needed to eat the hand that fed it.

The boat rushed back to the dock with Capt. Wally unconscious and his hand in an alligator’s stomach. Amazingly, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers were able to locate the same gator, euthanize it, and retrieve his hand, but sadly, they could not reattach it. But the bad news doesn’t end there for Capt. Wally. Feeding gators is illegal in Florida, and he is under criminal investigation. –Brian McClintock

It’s not a rare to have an alligator wander into your yard, but how about your hot tub?

While appropriately watching Gator Boys on Animal Planet, Walter Marshall, of Merritt Island, Florida heard his dog barking and went out to see what the fuss was all about. It turned out to be a three- or four-foot who slinked into his hot tub. According to the Daily Mail, Marshall called Fish and Wildlife officers to remove the party animal from his Jacuzzi, but the gator did not go willingly and put up a fight, snapping his jaws and whipping his powerful tail.

The gator was released into the wild away from any residential areas. –Brian McClintock

Last year, along with catfish noodling, Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed into law the legalization of hunting hogs from helicopters. Since then, people have gone a little crazy, even using crossbows, but the results have been a huge success for Texas.

According to Outdoor Hub, not only is Texas benefitting from getting more hogs out of the environment but helping the finances in the ranching communities throughout the state.

“Farmers and ranchers are going from having the expense themselves to making income from it,” said Representative Sid Miller, writer of the bill, in an interview with The Dallas Morning News.

In all, there have been about 1,422 helicopter hunts for hogs, as best as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department can estimate. These usually sell for about $300 a seat, so not only are the farmers benefitting, but the guides are too. With that bill, Texas created a $300,000-plus industry in just one year.

Dingos are free-roaming wild dogs in Australia, not unlike coyotes and wolves here in North America. Famously, 32 years ago, Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton screamed out in horror as a dingo carried her 2-month old daughter, Azaria, away from their campsite at Ayer’s Rock. 

The ordeal lead to many investigations, some believed Chamberlain-Creighton killed her daughter, which she initially was convicted of, but later proved innocent in 1988. The ordeal even lead to a Meryl Streep movie, A Cry in the Darkness, and the famous Elaine Benes line from Seinfeld. But, Chamberlain-Creighton has finally been vindicated as the coroner has ruled that a dingo really did take her baby.

“Shortly after Mrs Chamberlain placed Azaria in the tent, a dingo or dingoes entered the tent, took Azaria and carried and dragged her from the immediate area,” said coroner Elizabeth Morris, according to CNN.com. ”It it is clear that there is evidence that in particular circumstances a dingo is capable of attacking, taking and causing the death of young children.”

The ruling came down on Monday, June 11, which would have been Azaria’s 32nd birthday. –Brian McClintock

We all know that dogs are a huge asset on the water and in the field. Well, the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans are using a German shepherd to help them sniff out lobster poachers.

Sonic is one of only two dogs known in the world to be able to smell pregnant, female lobsters, which are illegal to catch in Canada. During routine stops, Sonic inspects the catches, which he can identify the glue that holds lobster eggs in the females. The 3-year-old German shepherd took over for his partner, Buddy, who is now semi-retired.

“As far as I know, Buddy was the first dog in the world (trained to sniff out ‘berried’ female lobsters),” Stuart told the Star. “You are not allowed to have female lobsters with eggs on them. You can see the eggs … on the abdomen of the lobster. They are to be put back in the water because that’s your next generation.”

A man claims he acted in self defense when he shot a black bear sow in his backyard in Nevada County, California. He then found her cubs, and just wanted to give them a good home. So, naturally, he put them in a cage and headed to the nearest gas station.

According to the L.A. Times, a passerby saw the spectacle and called the Fish and Game poaching line. So, the sheriff’s deputies and game warden headed to the Sierra Super Shop. Authorities went to the man’s home and did not see any signs of a dead bear.

“There’s a lot of parts to this person’s story that don’t add up,” department spokesman Patrick Foy said.

Experts guess the cubs, a male and female that weigh 11 and 13 pounds, are 5 to 6 months old. Although they’re in good health, they are too young to be released into the wild, Foy said, which is why they will spend several months at a rehabilitation facility in South Lake Tahoe.

They’re still investigating as to whether or not the man should face charges. We’re guessing he has some fines heading his way. –Brian McClintock

I’m sure the group of campers were all enamored when this little canine wandered into their campsite near Ketchum, Idaho. So, they scooped up what they thought was a lost dog and took it to the vet.

That’s when they found out that it was at least part wolf.

After the DNA test confirmed that this was a predator not a pet, they moved it to Idaho’s Zoo Boise, where it’s being cared for until officials and animal groups can locate the wolf’s pack. The pup is not taking to captivity too well, is afraid of humans, and not eating well. Lone wolf pups have a very low survival rate, and the rush is on for them to locate his family.

Obviously, officials are urging campers not to pick up baby wild animals. –Brian McClintock

Officials are scouring local convenience store message boards for a Lost Wallaby sign in Cambridge Springs, Pa. in the northwest corner of the state.

Sarah Dippold, a former Pennsylvania Game Commission biologist aide, was talking with her landlord who saw the marsupial on the street near her apartment. Dippold went down, took a picture and sent it to the PGC. Officials came out and were able to tranquilize the wallaby, which is now at a licensed facility waiting for its owner.

We’re guessing that if this wallaby was not legally owned, it might be at that facility for quite awhile. –Brian McClintock

Short Mountain in Cannon County, Tennessee is rugged terrain with gentle slopes and craggy ridges, which made it ideal for drug dealers to grow and hide marijuana for about a decade.

But, the government got wise and seized the land, and when the did the discovered species of crayfish, salamanders and beetles not found anywhere else, according to the Tennessean. So, instead of setting the land aside for development, they conserved it, and area hunters and other outdoor recreationists are going to benefit from the plush pot fields.

“It’s irreplaceable land, it’s irreplaceable habitat, it’s unique to Tennessee,” said Neal Appelbaum, president of the Stones River Watershed Association. “The idea that this would have been sold off and developed never really made sense. But everybody had to come to the agreement that this is the right thing to do. Lots of people could have had reasons not to.”

In all, about 1,000 acres are going to be set aside for future generations to enjoy. Hunters will have some interesting neighbors though, as Shade Mountain lends its name to a whiskey distillery, coffee company, and an enclave for homosexuals who live off the land. –Brian McClintock

There are a lot of weird taxidermy pictures out there, but this one might be the strangest thing I’ve ever seen done to a dead animal.

Dutch artist Bart Jansen’s cat Orville decided to pay tributes to the aviation roots of the feline’s name, and took his dead cat and turned it into a mini-helicopter. Orville was hit by a car and killed, and Jansen decided to make it a “visual art project,” which was displayed during the KunstRAI art festival in Amsterdam June 3, 2012, according to BuzzFeed.com.

I’m thinking this might be a fun thing to do with a flying squirrel. –Brian McClintock

Cape Codders don’t see bears often. Never, actually, so it’s news that there have been several confirmed sitings of a black bear on the Cape in the past several days, mostly in the Orleans area, where this video clip was taken with an infrared camera. Fish and Wildlife authorities say there hasn’t been a bear on the Cape in 200 years. The burning question: How did the estimated 350-lb animal get here? Maybe he stowed away on a boat, aircraft, or the P&B Bus, but that seems really unlikely given how crowded the Cape is in the summer. I mean, someone would have noticed, right? (“Who’s that bulky guy in seat 19 B?”) He could simply have walked over the Bourne or Sagamore bridge, but again, there’s heavy traffic on those narrow spans 24/7, so he didn’t sneak in that way. It seems most likely that he swam from somewhere south of Boston. Tourists–they’ll do anything to get here.

With a pond in his backyard in Tampa, Florida, Bryan Peabody is used to seeing plenty of alligators, but it was a bobcat that first caught his eye. The cat was sitting just on the edge of the water, so Peabody grabbed his camera. Then, he saw the 10-foot aligator coming right for the bobcat, and he started snapping pictures. This is probably a pretty common scene in Florida, but there’s rarely a camera to document it. –Brian McClintock
