Due to a scheduling conflict, the season finale of Brotherhood Outdoors will now air this Sunday, April 14. Details below.

Nashville, TN—The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s award-winning hunting and fishing TV show, Brotherhood Outdoors, will feature a Texas quail and hog hunt with professional shooter and veteran, police chief Diane Sorantino, at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 14 on Sportsman Channel.

A proud member of PBA Local 59 in Cape May County, New Jersey, Sorantino is also a member of Team Beretta and the National Sporting Clays Association Team USA. She has two World Championship titles to her name—making her a quick shot when it came to pursuing quail at Wildcat Creek Resort in Detroit, Texas.

“While filming Diane’s adventure, we mounted a camera to her shotgun,” said Brotherhood Outdoors co-host Julie McQueen. “We discovered that she doesn’t even blink when she pulls the trigger. In fact, she keeps her eye on the target and only pulls her gaze away after the target has fallen.”

To level the playing field, the Brotherhood Outdoors crew added a wild hog hunt to the mix. Not only did Sorantino get to experience her first shot at a Southern hog but she got to pursue one of America’s most invasive species and help remedy the problem at Wildcat Creek Resort.

“In her more than 25 years on the force, Diane has dedicated her time to protecting people in her community,” said USA Executive Director Fred Myers. “We are honored to share her story and get people excited about hunting by marrying her unparalleled shooting skills and sportsmanship together in this episode.”

Winner of a 2012 Sportsman Choice award, Brotherhood Outdoors awards union sportsmen and women who are committed to preserving North America’s outdoor heritage with a guided trip or the opportunity to show off their guiding skills and local hunting or fishing destinations on national TV.

Presented by Bank of Labor, Brotherhood Outdoors is also sponsored by Employee Benefit Solutions, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, National Electrical Contractors Association, United Association/International Training Fund as well as Buck Knives and Burris/Steiner Optics.

To see what happens when the coveys fly and the hogs run for cover, tune in to Sportsman Channel at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 14.

For more information about Brotherhood Outdoors or a complete lineup, visit BrotherhoodOutdoors.tv.

According to the Journal Advocate, as pheasant and quail seasons open tomorrow, hunters are going to have a “complicated” season.

“Populations across the region are much lower than in 2011,” said Ed Gorman, small game manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. “This area was stricken by a dry winter in 2011-12, and extreme heat and drought during the primary nesting and brood rearing season in the summer of 2012. Hunters in northeast Colorado will see impacts of drought in the fields this season, in terms of bird numbers and cover availability, but may find better populations of pheasants in the irrigated croplands of the South Platte River valley in 2012.”

This summer’s drought caused wide-spread devastation throughout much of the West. And hunters everywhere other than in the southeast Baca and Prowers Counties, where there was good rainfall, could be facing a rough year in Colorado. -Brian McClintock

A recent helicopter survey over central Tooele County, Utah, shows that there is a record number of chuckar partridges in Utah this year.

“I think hunters will have a good chukar hunt in central Utah this fall,” says Robinson, upland game coordinator for the DWR. “Conditions were good for chukars to nest and raise their chicks.”

According to the official release on the Outdoor Wire, Robinson counted 46 chukars per square mile. That’s more than double the 18 chukars per square mile biologists saw in the same area last year. And it’s the highest number seen since 2006, when 97 chukars per square mile were counted.

While the area around Tooele County has good numbers, that wasn’t the case in the entire state, where dry, hot conditions in northern and southern Utah cut down on chick survival rates.

But, for anyone looking to hunt in the central section of the state, the chukars should be flying wild. -Brian McClintock

Introduced by Sen. John Tester of Montana, the 84-to-7 vote in favor of moving to vote on passage after recess reflects the broad support of these conservation, hunting and fishing provisions, writes Ducks Unlimited in their official release. Some of the highlights are better public lands management, increased fish habitat resources, improved billfish conservation efforts, extended fish and wildlife grants, clarified lead tackle and ammunition management, and many, many more.

In this bill are a lot of measures that many outdoorsmen have been fighting for over the course of years. You can read a full breakdown on everything in the bill on Tom Sadler’s Middle River Dispatches blog.

But, the Sportsmen’s Act now moves to the House of Representatives, where there is sure to be a fight.

“Now we must keep up the momentum to ensure this bill passes into law in November through working with both sides in the House of Representatives,” said Paul Schmidt, DU’s chief conservation officer. ”Fish and wildlife conservation and hunting and fishing have always had strong bipartisan appeal, and movement of this bill in the Senate is a reflection of that support.”

We’ll keep tracking it the bill’s progress. -Brian McClintock

There’s a lot of huge topics being discusses at the High Lonesome Ranch this week at the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership‘s Western Media Summit, but every morning starts out with getting out in the field and seeing why we are all in this battle to conserve our fish and wildlife habitats.

Today, I headed out to the upland bird fields with Geoff Mullins, Senior Director of Policy Initiatives and Communications for the TRCP and Nick Payne, Colorado Field Representative for the TRCP. High Lonesome has a wide variety of birds, including ringneck pheasants, hungarian partridges, and chukar partridges. The dry, hot summer has left the habitat a bit rugged, and the birds were outrunning our dogs, Loo Loo the English pointer and Digger the black labrador retriever. It made the shooting a tad slow for our group, targeting mainly the grassy patches with scattered brush. The birds didn’t seem to want to hold in the thicker sage brush, or they were holding too well in there. Other groups had massive success with bringing down 30 to 35 birds, though.

After a few hours of hunting, our guide John had to take us to the kennels here at High Lonesome to switch up the dogs. Loo Loo suffered a ripped-open pad, so we wanted to get her out of the field. High Lonesome’s kennel is the Taj Mahal for hunting dogs. With 45 kennels, a dog treadmill, specialized floors, a water recycling system, it’s a first rate dog training and housing system.

We headed back out for a few walks and misses on a couple rooster pheasants with Layla the yellow labrador retriever. In all, we only downed five birds (three pheasants and two huns), but had amazing morning chasing the birds.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has rolled out this year’s new regulations, and included in those regulations are expanding hunting in 16 different refuges in 14 states.

“By expanding hunting in our National Wildlife Refuge System, we are supporting a heritage that has been handed down from generations and helping to achieve the goal of President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative to connect Americans to the natural world through outdoor recreation,” said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. “Hunters have been a mainstay of conservation in America for more than 100 years, and expanding hunting opportunities helps ensure that we will have the resources to care for our wildlife and its habitat in the future.”

In addition to opening the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge in Michigan to migratory bird hunting, upland game hunting and big game hunting for the first time, there are more hunting opportunities at refuges in Oregon, South Carolina, Louisiana, Montana, Rhode Island, Minnesota, Tennessee, Washington, Texas, Idaho, Georgia, Indiana, and Missouri.

“The National Wildlife Refuge System, one of America’s greatest conservation success stories, is committed to offering quality hunting and fishing programs — for all Americans — wherever they are compatible with refuge purposes,” said Service Director Dan Ashe.

The rules didn’t have all good news though. They did shut down hunting in two spots. Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge in Hawaii is now closed to big game hunting. And migratory bird hunting has been shut down in Santee National Wildlife Refuge in South Carolina. -Brian McClintock

Michael Pearce, outdoor writer for the Wichita Eagle, accompanied us on yesterday’s youth/mentor dove hunt.

KDWPT had set aside a sunflower field on the McPherson Valley Wetlands for an opening morning hunt for youth/mentors only. The local Pheasants Forever chapter provided breakfast in the field. Volunteers from local PF and SCI chapters spent the morning having fun outdoors with the kids.

You can check out Michael’s article here: http://www.kansas.com/2012/09/01/247178 … n-the.html

He also put up a photo gallery: http://www.kansas.com/2012/09/01/247180 … opens.html

I hope everyone here takes some time this fall to share our hunting heritage with a kid!

“This is a great opportunity for families to hunt closer to home and for youth especially to connect with nature,” said Jim Paxon, chief public information officer for Game and Fish.

According to the official release on the Outdoor Wire, this is the second year that the land has been open to dove hunters thanks to a new law that gave the Arizona Game and Fish Commission authority over regulating the use of firearms for the take of wildlife within municipal boundaries. It has opened up a lot of areas in more urban areas.

If most of you read my post that I put on here, you know that I am an avid whitetail deer and turkey hunter. I recently picked up my Merriam turkey cape mount from my taxidermist and it looks great or at least it did look great. Well, with not knowing where I was going hang this beautiful trophy I had to put it in my spare bedroom on the bed with the door CLOSED. I was at work saturday when my wife called and told me the bad news. My older beagle had opened the door and decided to use it as a chew toy! Needless to say I was extremely upset. So I had her send me a picture of what it looked like and well you can see it for yourself. When I got home from work I took it straight to my taxidermist to see if he could salvage it. Luckily my dog started at the base and worked his way up. And with that my taxidermist said that he would be able to save it and make it look good. So moral of the story is, make sure the bedroom door is locked! When I get it back I will repost pictures of the finished product.

But in 2010, when Walsh and his family decided to take a risk and adopt a rescued bird dog, everything changed.

Walsh had always wanted a hunting dog but as a household of two public servants, a toddler and a teenager, he and his wife Marta, a Detroit ER nurse, couldn’t rationalize the cost of purchasing one. When Marta stumbled across a German Wirehaired Pointer, who had been abused and pulled from a kill shelter, she knew it would take some hard work but that bringing Houdini into their family was worth the risk.

“Houdini actually got our whole family into hunting. My brother-in-law, my nephews, both me and my wife…even my sister wants to buy a shotgun now,” said Walsh. “It’s just brought everybody together over this dog.”

Now just two years later, Houdini and her brother Hobson, a rescued German Shorthaired Pointer, got to star alongside Walsh during a Michigan pheasant hunt on the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s award-winning outdoor TV show Brotherhood Outdoors. Thanks to the help of retired UAW member and dog trainer Bill Murdock, Walsh was able to show off both dogs’ new skills to host and former dog trainer, Tom Ackerman.

Hunting on Colonial Farms Hunting Preserve in Chelsea, Michigan, the site offered Walsh and Ackerman 100 acres of diverse terrain including rolling hills, thickets, woodland, swampland and cover crop fields. Joined throughout the weekend by his co-worker Jason Clark as well as his wife, Marta, Walsh decided to run both dogs at the same time on the second day of the hunt.

“It was risky, but they pointed a lot of birds and really made me look good,” said Walsh. “Hopefully their success on the show will help draw attention to the increasing amount of unwanted hunting dogs that are out there for other families like ours.”

When he’s not on the job, rescuing bird dogs or out in the field, Walsh can be found immersed in his community and volunteering with the Eastpointe Good Fellows, Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Ancient Order of Hibernians. A member of the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and the Michigan Duck Hunters Association, Walsh understands the impact that sportsmen and women can have on preserving and protecting North America’s outdoor heritage for future generations.

While there’s no doubt that training the dogs took a lot of time, determination and patience for the Walsh family, in the end, it was Houdini and Hobson who stole the show during their national TV debut. If you watch the episode closely, you might even catch a glimpse of the newest addition to the Walsh pack.

Tune in to Brotherhood Outdoors on Sportsman Channel at 8 p.m. (E/P) on Thursday, August 2.

But, with the upland bird’s numbers dwindling, they are faced with that challenge as the sage grouse could soon qualify for protection under the Endangered Species Act.

But, Idaho is hoping that another hunting season will show that they are best suited for managing the birds. They are currently accepting comments on their proposed sage grouse season for this year. Among changes include closure of all sage grouse hunting in Elmore County, from a portion last year, and moving opening day to Sept. 15, earlier than in 2011, according to KIVITV.com.

Ronald Mittleider of South Dakota is being fined $13,000 for violations including, but not limited to, running a lodge that allowed clients to shoot owls. Mr. Mittleider also hunts for more conventional species, but failed to stay within the rules. He and his clients took more than the bag limit of pheasants regularly in South Dakota. Why should hunters, anglers, and outdoorsmen care? Because there are quite a few very important programs to enhance our natural resources, like the Conservation Reserve Program, Open Fields, Wetlands Reserve Program, etc.

In a close 52-47 vote, the 2012 Farm Bill has taken the next step to become law, with the House of Representatives set to tackle the bill next.

“Waiting only increases budget pressures, while rural landscapes continue to be diminished and fish and wildlife populations and the economies they support suffer,” said Jennifer Mock Schaeffer, Farm Bill coordinator for the Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies. “The Farm Bill has helped conserve and enhance millions of acres of fish and game habitat, and we urge the House to follow the Senate’s lead and finalize its version of the bill without delay.”

The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership did note in their release that three sportsmen’s bills were not included in the Senate version of the bill. The TRCP had come out in support of those bills. But, don’t be fooled, this is still a great win for sportsmen. Lets hope it moves quickly through the house.

But there is finally some good news out of Nebraska.

After surveying Nebraska hunters, the state’s Game and Parks Commission is happy to announce that there is a 2 percent increase in ringneck pheasants and an 175 percent increase in bobwhite quail numbers.

The news wasn’t great in some areas of the state, but overall Nebraska is doing well. The bobwhite numbers are recovering from a very harsh winter back in 2009, according to the Outdoor Hub. Jeff Lusk, Program Manager for Upland Game with Nebraska Game and Parks, cautions that percent differences comparatively can be misleading when relative abundance is low – regionally and statewide – as that leads to large percentage changes.

But, even if percentages can be misleading. Having them move in the positive is a very good thing. –Brian McClintock

According to their blog post, “in these high-risk zones, 1 in every 5 ticks collected was infected with Lyme disease.” These states include Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the entire northeastern United States.

But that protection could come at the cost of a lot of development and other restrictions, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife Director Ken Mayer is addressing the “huge concern” for the state.

The bi-state sage grouse is set to go on the ESL in September 2013, and the greater sage grouse is set for September 2015.

“There is a chance we can succeed (in preventing the listing),” Mayer added, according to Reno Gazette-Journal. “I am convinced there is ample time to address the 2015 Greater sage grouse decision because a hell of a lot of things are being done. With the Bi-State, I think we do have time as well. It is more questionable whether we will make it with the Bi-State or not.”

It’s not that Mayer is not concerned about the sage grouse, but he wants to see the states in charge of these projects, and not the federal government. He’s likely not alone, and many are looking at how spotted owl protections impacted management plans, and the gray wolf experiment is fresh in everyone’s mind.

Mayer and the Nevada DOW is working hard to keep these birds off the list. We’ll let you know how he does. –Brian McClintock

“I am happy now, to recall that I was no only his son but his companion, and whenever there was a hunting expedition or any other pleasure, I was always with him.” –John Philip Sousa

“Mr. Janet Reno? I think Mr. Janet Reno… I think he’s one of the best hunting dogs in the world.” –Ted Nugent

“Pa did not like a country so old and worn out that the hunting was poor. He wanted to go west. For two years he had wanted to go west and take a homestead, but Ma did not want to leave the settled country.” –Laura Ingalls Wilder

“The perils of duck hunting are great – especially for the duck.” –Walter Cronkite

“When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible.” –Dale Earnhardt

“You see I’m against hunting, in fact I’m a hunt saboteur. I go out the night before and shoot the fox.” –Tim Vine

“One of my favorite clothing patterns is camouflage. Because when you’re in the woods it makes you blend in. But when you’re not it does just the opposite. It’s like ‘hey, there’s an asshole.’” –Demetri Martin

“If some animals are good at hunting and others are suitable for hunting, then the Gods must clearly smile on hunting.” –Aristotle

“Civilized life has altogether grown too tame, and, if it is to be stable, it must provide a harmless outlets for the impulses which our remote ancestors satisfied in hunting.” –Bertrand Russell

“There is a passion for hunting something deeply implanted in the human breast.” –Charles Dickens

“Use enough gun.” –Robert Ruark

“One does not hunt in order to kill. On the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted.” –Jose Ortega y Gasset

“There ain’t many troubles that a man can’t fix with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six” – Lindy Wisdom.

“When some of my friends have asked me anxiously about their boys, whether they should let them hunt, I have answered yes–remembering that it was one of the best parts of my education–make them hunters.” –Henry David Thoreau

“All the sounds of this valley run together into one great echo, a song that is sung by all the spirits of this valley. Only a hunter hears it.” –Chaim Potok

“There is a solitude, or perhaps a solemnity, in the few hours that precede the dawn of day which is unlike that of any others in the twenty-four, and which I cannot explain or account for. Thoughts come to me at this time that I never have at any other.” –George Bird Grinnell

“This scenery already rich pleasing and beautiful was still further heightened by immense herds of Buffaloe, deer Elk and Antelopes which we saw in every direction feeding on the hills and plains” –Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

“The firing began in earnest after my first shot, and grew into such a cannonade as I never heard before or since on a hunting field. We killed and brought to bag nineteen fine turkeys.” –Gen. William E. Strong

“The wild life of today is not ours to do with as we please. The original stock was given to us in trust for the benefit both of the present and the future. We must render an accounting of this trust to those who come after us.” –Theodore Roosevelt

“We cannot but pity the boy who has never fired a gun; he is no more humane, while his education has been sadly neglected.” –Henry David Thoreau

“Voluntary adherence to an ethical code elevates the self-respect of the sportsman, but it should not be forgotten that voluntary disregard of the code degenerates and depraves him.” –Aldo Leopold

“The pleasure of the sportsman in the chase is measured by the intelligence of the game and its capacity to elude pursuit and in the labor involved in the capture.” –John Dean Caton

“The more I see of the people’s representatives, the more I like my dogs.” –Comte Alfred D’Orsay

“Your heart grows tired of waiting, and suddenly–but only sportsmen will understand me–suddenly in the deep stillness comes a special kinda of whirr and swish, year hear the measured stroke of swift wings–and the woodcock, with his long beak drooping gracefully down, comes swimming out from a dark birch tree to meet your fire. This is what is meant by ‘waiting for the flight.’” –Ivan Turgenev

“The land comes alive through its wild creatures.” –Charles Fergus

“Hunting has opened the earth to me and let me sense the rhythms and hierarchies of nature.” –Charles Fergus

“Man…can understand a lion, because a lion is life in its simplest form, beautiful, menacing, dangerous, and attractive to his ego.” –Robert Ruark

“A lion has always been the symbol of challenge, the prototype of personal hazard. You get the lion, or the lion gets you.” –Robert Ruark.

“I knew, coldly and outside myself, that I could shoot a rifle on game as well as any some of a bitch that ever lived. Like hell I could.” –Ernest Hemingway

“Riflemen are made, not born.” –Col. Townsend Whelen

“Unless a man has considerable skill with and reliance in his weapon, he will not remain cool in the presence of dangerous game close by.” — Col. Townsend Whelen

“I speak of Africa and golden joys’ the joy of wandering through lonely lands; the joy of hunting the might and terrible lords of wilderness, the cunning, the wary, and the grim.” –Theodore Roosevelt

“I don’t regard nature as a spectator sport.” –Ed Zern

“What an absurd time to be a hunter. Yet has there ever been a more vital one?” –Thomas McIntyre

“God doesn’t count the hours you spend afield with friends.” –Gene Hill

“In a civilized and cultivated country, wild animals only continue to exist at all when preserved by sportsmen.” –Theodore Roosevelt

“If there is a sacred moment in the ethical pursuit of game, it is the moment you release the arrow or touch off the fatal shot.” –Jim Posewitz

“I’m not sure where in my anatomy the hunting impulse resides–in my genese, some would say, or in my soul–but it’s certainly there as, I’m convinced, it is in all of us.” –William G. Tapply

“It boils down to this: Accept your hunting partners like your mate–for better or worse.” –Joel Vance

“At a minimum, a good gun must be useful, beautiful, and well-made enough to last a lifetime.” –Stephen Bodio

“Well you better think twice on it Jack, you’re better off buyin’ a shotgun dead off the rack.” –Bruce Springsteen

“A vote is like a rifle: its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.” –Theodore Roosevelt
