At the White Mountain Apache Reservation, though, Manuel Quintero Jr. downed the elk of the year. Quintero downed a 445-inch non-typical bull, that green scored 465 inches. He shot the elk at about 50 yards, and it broke a couple points as it crashed to the ground, which reduced his score.

Two Arizona pronghorn are currently tied at the top of the B&C books at 95 points. A panel needs to verify Jaksick’s pronghorn, but if everything is on the up and up, it looks like a Nevada antelope is heading to the top of the B&C books. -Brian McClintock

This year marks the 125th anniversary of Theodore Roosevelt starting Boone & Crockett, and they are celebrating with sharing the counties where the most of their trophies have come from.

“Consistent trophy production over time is proof that conservation measures are working exceptionally well, and the 125 counties on this list stand out as historic models of success,” said Boone and Crockett Club President Ben Wallace. “But the good news extends well beyond the list. Trophy production appears to be trending upward with many species and across much of North America. In fact, last year our records program had 979 new entries, compared to 372 just 30 years ago.”

Here’s their top 10.

1. Wyoming, Carbon County—282 pronghorn in B&C records
2. California, Mendocino County—190 typical Columbia blacktail deer in B&C records
3. California, Trinity County—185 typical Columbia blacktail deer in B&C records
4. Wyoming, Sweetwater County—183 pronghorn in B&C records
5. Wyoming, Fremont County—153 pronghorn in B&C records
6. Nevada, Clark County—142 desert sheep in B&C records
7. Wyoming, Natrona County—142 pronghorn in B&C records
8. Montana, Granite County—134 bighorn sheep in B&C records
9. South Dakota, Custer County—134 bison in B&C records
10. Montana, Sanders County—132 bighorn sheep in B&C records

Hopefully one of these counties will produce a record this year. -Brian McClintock

Fletcher Culpepper, 27, was hunting on Monday, October 22 when he downed the 260-pound, 22-point deer with an unofficial green score of 233 and two-eighths inches, according to Outdoor Hub.

The deer was aged at four and a half years old, and many believe that after the 60-day mandatory drying period, the buck should land in the top 5 of biggest bucks ever bagged in Georgia.

Chris Campbell was hunting in Bladen County, just hoping to find a doe for the freezer, when he downed a 150-inch, 10-point whitetail buck. It was opening day of rifle season, but Campbell opted for his .50-caliber muzzleloader instead. He found a spot full of acorns and deer signs, and set up his stand for the night. He didn’t have to wait long for a doe to walk out, and he was just about to shoot when he saw antlers.

“Just before I shot, a big deer came into the picture further up the ravine, trotting towards the does and dispersing them like a covey of quail.” He says. “I saw his crab claws and his width and knew that it was him!”

The green score has the buck at 150 3/4 inches. According to Dixie Deer Classic, the muzzleloader record for the state is 170 5/8, so maybe this is a county record. Either way, it’s an impressive Tarheel buck. -Brian McClintock

We told you back in August about his massive grizzly bear, and now, it’s officially a record. West got that his bear is officially Muzzleloader World Record grizzly bear, eclipsing the previous score by a full three inches, at 26 2/16″ B&C, according to the release on the Outdoor Wire.

West was hunting in British Columbia, using a CVA .50 Caliber ACCURA V2, when he made a true, 49-yard shot on the monstergrizzly bear. West’s grizzly was scored at 26 1/16 inches, eclipsing the standing record by almost three inches. You can watch the entire hunt on YouTube.

“I am extremely grateful to my sponsors and fans for making this hunt and my amazing hunting career possible,” said West. “Hopefully, public awareness from this hunt will encourage more people to pick up a CVA muzzleloader, start hunting and join the Longhunter Society.” –Brian McClintock

According to the Bismark Tribune, Aaron Folk was hunting on September 11 when he downed the 10 by 11 bull with a spread of 53 and three-eighths inches and a green score of 166 and one-eighth inches.

Folk spotted the bull in a sunflower field, got permission from the landowner, and stalked the record within 20 yards before making a successful shot with his bow. After the 60-day drying period, Folk should have the new North Dakota record, which was set in 1994 when Curt Michaelson of Beulah downed a 9 by 11 bull in Bottineau County that had a 47 and five-eighths-inch spread. -Brian McClintock

Well, it looks like it’s a fraud.

During the scoring process, the Boone & Crockett scorer, Matthew J. Cooper, checked out the lower jaw of the buck. He estimated it to be about a 2-year-old deer, which seems impossible to have a wild buck grow to that size in just two years. So, Cooper asked Long to the reported kill site, which raised another red flag.

“The kill site was unrealistic,” Cooper said, according to the Watertown Daily Times.

It was then that Cooper came to the determination that the buck was farm-raised, and therefore, ineligible for any record. Instead of trying to prove it was taken outside of a fence, Long has withdrawn his record request. -Brian McClintock

Watertown native, Wayne Long, knows just how great that hunting can be, and he has the 22-point whitetail to prove it. Long was hunting near his hometown on Thursday, September 27, when he downed a massive whitetail with a green score of 220 inches.

“I pulled the bow back and out walked this thing,” Long said. He estimated the deer was about 175 pounds, according to the Watertown Daily Times. A doe had run out earlier, and Long expected another doe to follow, but this monster was in pre-rut mode, chasing the doe.

The current non-typical record for New York is 210 and 4/8, so if this score stands, Long has a new New York record. -Brian McClintock

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks has confirmed that a new record alligator was tagged on September 22.

According to the official release on Outdoor Hub, Tom Grant of Boyle, Mississippi was hunting on a private hunting club near Fitler, Mississippi in Issaquena County when he downed the 697.5-pounder. It bests the standing record by about 7 pounds.

Grant’s gator was not the longest ever harvested in Mississippi, though, falling just 5 inches short of that record.

“When we snagged the alligator with two rod and reel snatch hooks, we knew he was big, we just didn’t know he would be this big.” Grant was assisted by fellow alligator hunters Jim Reed, Michael Robbers, and Kenny Winter.

The county is a hotbed for gigantic gators, and wildlife officials do not think this will be the last record to come from Issaquena. If this record is bested this season, we’ll let you know. -Brian McClintock

He had the whitetail in his sites in 2010, but a sapling stopped his arrow before it hit the deer. He got good news after he showed up some trail camera photos after the end of last year’s season.

Iverson didn’t have to wait long for a second chance. On opening day of archery season in Minnesota, on September 15, this bruiser came up to Iverson again, and this time, his shot was true. According to Deer and Deer Hunting, the buck measured 234 inches and nets 227 inches. If those scores hold up, it could possibly be the biggest nontypical buck ever killed by a bowhunter in the Gopher State.

“He popped out along the edge of a cornfield about 100 yards from my stand,” Iverson said. “He just was really casual. He walked a few yards, stopped, ate some corn, and kept working down the field. I watched him for over an hour.”

He made the shot at 43 yards.

We’ll let you know if the whitetail makes its way to the top of the Minnesota record books. -Brian McClintock

Mike Cottingham of Prescott, Arkansas was hunting in Lake Millwood in Hempstead County when he bagged a 1,380-pound reptile during a permit-only alligator harvest.

“It was the largest without a doubt in terms of weight,” David Goad, chief of the wildlife management division for the AGFC, told the New York Daily News.

It took five people to get the gator to the dock, and the 13-f00t, 3-inch alligator wouldn’t fit in Cottingham’s boat.

“It’ll make a good trophy for this guy,” Goad said, “and maybe he will get to make a pair of boots or two, so we are very proud for him.” –Brian McClintock

The controversial “King Buck” score has been confirmed by the panel of B&C scorers, making it just a nice buck, and not the potential world record that many thought it should be.

Johnny King downed the huge whitetail near his hometown of Mount Horeb, Wisconsin in 2006. The controversy started when, back then, they decided that the buck was a non-typical, and the official Boone and Crockett score came down to a 217-5/8 non-typical. Since then, there have been some vocal opponents to that scoring decision. So vocal, that B&C even fired a few of their volunteer scorers for saying they thought it should be scored as a typical.

Basically, it boils down to the buck’s G3 some believe it’s a typical point, but, others say it’s an offset point to a point shooting off the G2. If that G3 would be a typical point, scorers put the buck larger than the world record Milo Hansen set with a 213-5/8 whitetail.

When Boone & Crockett re-opened the King Buck case, many thought it would lead to a reversal of the non-typical decision. It didn’t. According to their official release on the Outdoor Wire. The club confirmed the score. But there are still going to be a lot of people who say this controversy isn’t going anywhere. –Brian McClintock

Hunting with Chris Faber in the Missouri River Breaks, Hens brought his family, a Canadian friend, and a cameraman, and managed to do just that. His friend and cameraman, Tyler Johnerson, was working the sheep grunt, which stopped the bighorn, giving Hens an 84-yard shot at the ram.

His shot was true.

According to MontanaOutdoor, the ram has a Pope & Young green score of 202 2/8, which should get Hens his third sheep record. He also holds the bow record for stone and desert sheep. –Brian McClintock

Knox traveled to Greenville to hunt early fall black bears with Jim Webber and Steve Monroe’s Grand Slam Guide Service, and he has bagged the new state record. Hunting with Monroe on Friday, September 7, Knox, an Army veteran, downed a 699-pound black bear, that is set to become the new state record.

“The guesses in camp were that it might be the biggest all year,” Knox said, according to the Bangor Daily News. “Maybe 550 to 580 pounds. I had no idea at the time what the state record was, or even that there was one.”

The official weight came in at 19 pounds more than the standing record, set in 1993. –Brian McClintockDo you like this story?
Hannah and Paige Harris have become local celebrities thanks to their whitetail deer success and the stars of Danville High School. In 2010, Hannah downed a 204-3/8, ranking it as the sixth best deer ever measured in the non-typical category for Pennsylvania. Not to be outdone, her younger sister Paige went to the same spot last year and downed a 190-5/8, earning the 24th spot in the 2012 edition of Pennsylvania Big Game Records Book just released by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

According to the Press Enterprise, the new edition features 150 trophies from 2010 and 2011 that qualify for the Pennsylvania record books. But the two teenage girls from Danville are definitely the highlight. –Brian McClintock

West was hunting in British Columbia, using a CVA .50 Caliber ACCURA V2, when he made a true, 49-yard shot on the monster grizzly bear. West’s grizzly was scored at 26 1/16 inches, eclipsing the standing record by almost three inches.

“I feel extremely fortunate and very lucky,” said West, according to Outdoor Hub. “You never wake up in the morning going on a hunt and say to yourself, ‘I am going to go out today and take a world-record animal.’ To be honest, when I realized I had a potential world-record grizzly bear, I found it to be a very humbling experience.”

Thankfully, it was all captured for West’s show, and will air in a two-episode special in September on the Outdoor Channel. –Brian McClintock

Now Guinness has officially made this croc the new record for the largest of the species kept in captivity.

“There were mixed feelings,” Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said by telephone. “We’re really proud because it proves the rich biodiversity of our place but at the same time, there are fears that Lolong may not be alone.”

The crocodile was responsible for a few deaths, but now it’s giving back to the community. The town has earned 3,000,000 pesos from tourists coming to see the beast. And the town officials are actually hoping to get a permit to catch an even larger croc that has been spotted in the area. –Brian McClintock

According to Outdoor Life, Robert Christian was hunting in Pennsylvania this November when the brut of a bruin walked out. Christian was hunting whitetails during the rifle season in Stroud Township on his family’s property. The black bear season runs into the first week of deer season in Pennsylvania, and lucky for this hunter, he had his bear tag with him.

“This huge bear just came out of the woods. Straight at me. Along the same trail as the doe. I didn’t let it get near as close to me as the doe! I shot him in the shoulder just as he passed behind a tree,” said Christensen, who actually connected with the bear four times with his Remington .30-06.

The bear’s live weight was estimated at 732.78 pounds and weighed 621 pounds field dressed. Christian got more than 200 pounds of meat from the bear. It scored 23 9/16 inches, making it the largest black bear ever taken by a hunter based on Boone & Crockett’s listings. They are still in the process of filing the paperwork to make that record official. We’ll let you know how this plays out. –Brian McClintock

Brian Rogers was kayak hunting less than a mile away 10 years later when he downed the duck.

According to officials, in the 15 years that the Fish & Game’s Eastern Region has kept records, this is the oldest duck ever shot in the area.

“It’s an area that gets a lot of hunting pressure and to go through so many hunting seasons, it must have been a pretty wily old bird,” said Senior Fish & Game Officer Matt McDougall. “I think it’s fair to say however that this harvest could be considered a humane act, as from the description of the bird’s flying, it was nearing the end of its life.”

The recovery wasn’t an easy one for Rogers, who thought the duck looked like a juvenile, and was not in good shape when he shot it. The bird landed on some loose sand, and he had to crawl on his belly to recover the old bird.

“I said to my mate Tony that so far I’d only shot young and stupid birds, and now I can add geriatric to that. I am stunned to hear it was that old,” said Rogers.–Brian McClintock

Melissa Bachman has been planning her New Zealand red stag hunt for two years. The planning paid off.

Hunting with Ample Hunting outfitters near Gisborne in early March, Bachman and her crew made their way to stag country. Along the way hunting Merriam’s gobblers and shooting their 3-D course, they set up for the spot-and-stalk hunt.

They spotted a massive bull, and then the hunt was on. Bachman got within 35 yards of the bedded stag, waited for it to stand. Unfortunately, it spooked, taking a couple bounds, but it was not enough for the stag to get away. Bachman’s shot was true.

“The stag ended up scoring 474 3/8 (SCI scoring system), which put me No. 1 in the world at the time for stag with a bow for a woman. It also landed me No. 6 in the world overall for an archery kill. However, the world record was broken again last week by another woman, so now I’m technically No. 2 and No. 7. Regardless, I held the record for a while and the fantastic animal will always be a blessing to remember,” writes Bachman on the North American Hunting Club blog, Hardcore Huntress with Melissa Bachman.

I think we’d be pretty happy with dropping a spot with this stag on the wall. –Brian McClintock

According to People’s Defender, Jamie Nesbitt was hunting his usual grounds when he bagged a 24-pound bird that had an 11-1/4-inch beard with spurs 1-3/4 and 1-1/2 inches long. This gave him a NWTF score of 79, good enough for the 34 largest bird from Ohio. His spurs are the fifth largest on record in Ohio.

This falls way short of the number one gobbler, harvested last year. Terry Ellis tagged a 26-1/2-pounder with 5 beards, the longest beard being 11-3/4 inches long in Tuscarawas County. That bird scored over 150 points.

For the NWTF’s record scoring system and complete list of their records, check out their records website. –Brian McClintock

Troy Sheldon was hunting British Columbia’s Stikine River in 2011 when he downed a male goat that scored 57-4/8 Boone and Crockett points, besting the standing record by 6/8 of an inch. That record was set in 1949 and tied in 1999 with two other goats also harvested in British Columbia.

“British Columbia continues to set the standard for Rocky Mountain goats,” said Eldon Buckner, chairman of Boone and Crockett Club’s Records of North American Big Game Committee in their official release. “The province remains home to more than half of the world’s population and trophy-class specimens have been trending upward each decade since the 1970s. That testifies to the professionalism of the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.”

Sheldon, of Alexandria, Ky., was hunting with friend Carey Renner and guide Heidi Gutfrucht of Northwest Ranching and Outfitting when he used a Tikka T3 .270 WSM to make a perfect 319-yard shot across a ravine. –Brian McClintock
