Turkey: An Oklahoma Double!

It was the second week of Oklahoma's turkey season when I met my hunting buddy Jeff Phillips of Arctic Shield clothing in Skiatook, Oklahoma. I piled into his pickup and we headed to our lease just north of Hominy. We didn't have time to scout at all, so it was all sort of a crapshoot. [...]

Buffalo, NY Turkey Hunt

I topped my week of smallmouth bass fising on the East Basin of Lake Erie off with a visit to the surrounding turkey woods for a late spring hunt. Guiding me on the hunt would be the men behind Quaker Boy Game Calls: Ernie Calendrelli and Chris Kirby. Meeting up with the guys the night before, they [...]

Montana’s Mixed Bag

Having just returned from hunting the Ft. Benton area of Montana with Pheasants Forever, I have to tell you it's in stark contrast to South Dakota. Especially a South Dakota ranch managed for pheasants and holding a preserve license. But this is true wild-bird hunting in thick, heavy cover for a variety of skittish avian [...]

Wyoming Antelope & Other Critters

A great few days near Glenrock, WY with Scott and Angie Denny of Table Rock Outfitters! Our group all tagged out on the first day thanks to the plethora of opportunities on big antelope. My buck measured 16-1/8 inches, on its good side anyway. His right horn was busted off but he had some serious [...]

Dan Hosford: Heeling problem solving

Excellent video on heel work with a young dog. Many times a dog walking at heel will drop its nose to the ground and sniff while walking. This is not good! Heel is one of the biggest primary training exercises you can perform; if your dog is sniffing the ground, he's not concentrating on you [...]

South Dakota: Johannsen Farms Outfitting

A single standing cornfield at Johannsen Farms Outfitting near Tolstoy, South Dakota. It contained, and I'm not exaggerating, literally thousands of pheasants!!! Simply amazing for a wild-bird hunt. Eric Johannsen runs the pheasant-hunting portion of the family farm (and it is, primarily, a working farm) and doesn't stock. He believes good habitat will foster high bird [...]

South Dakota Pheasants

Some shots from this year's trip to South Dakota. We hunted the Aberdeen area, which is the best place in the state to hunt (estimates of 200+ birds per square mile). It was a combination hunt of public lands and a private-land hunt at Johannsen Farms Outfitters near Tolstoy, SD.
